How to Watch a Meteor Shower

Where should you look?
Look across a broad, open part of the sky rather than locking your eyes on one star or constellation. A shower's radiant is the point from which its meteors appear to trace backward. It identifies the shower's perspective, not the only place meteors can appear.
When an event page supplies a verified radiant, watch well away from it rather than staring directly at the point. Meteors seen close to the radiant can look shorter because their paths are foreshortened. The best practical view is still the clearest, darkest open sky available from your legal observing site.
Do not invent a compass direction from the shower name. Trees, buildings, local lights, Moon position and the event's actual geometry all change which part of the sky is most useful.

Why binoculars and telescopes usually make meteor watching harder
Meteors can appear anywhere across a large area of sky. Binoculars and telescopes magnify a small field, so they make it easier to miss a fast streak outside the view.
Use your unaided eyes for the shower. Binoculars can be enjoyable before or after the meteor watch for separately verified targets, but they are not the main tool for counting or noticing meteors.

Arrive early and expect quiet gaps
NASA recommends allowing at least about half an hour for a meteor watch after you are settled. That is a practical minimum, not a promise that a meteor will appear within a certain number of minutes.
Low-rate showers can include long quiet periods. Even stronger annual showers do not produce a perfectly even stream. Comfort matters because the useful method is to remain still, scan broadly and keep watching long enough for random timing to work in your favor.
A reclining chair, warm layers and a position that does not strain your neck can improve the session without changing the sky itself.

Why a quoted meteor rate is not your personal count
The International Meteor Organization uses zenithal hourly rate, or ZHR, to describe activity under standardized ideal conditions: a very dark sky, a fully visible field and the radiant overhead. Your actual count can be lower because of cloud, haze, moonlight, artificial light, twilight, radiant altitude, field of view and simple random variation.
Do not divide a published ZHR into a promised number every few minutes. Use it to compare the shower's potential with other showers, then make the local decision from the event page and current conditions.

Choose a safe, legal place to wait
A meteor session often keeps you outside longer than a quick look at the Moon. Confirm nighttime access, gate hours, parking, road conditions and any permit or reservation requirements through the managing agency.
Scout unfamiliar ground before dark when practical. Stay out of traffic lanes and away from cliff edges, unstable shorelines and unmarked private property. Save the route before entering an area with weak cell service, and share the location and expected return time for a remote trip.

Does a bright Moon make every meteor shower a no-go?
No. Moonlight mainly removes fainter meteors, while brighter meteors can still appear. The practical effect depends on Moon altitude, direction, timing, the shower's normal strength and your location. Use the event page and local forecast instead of treating illumination alone as a binary answer.
Can I watch a meteor shower from a city?
Yes, but artificial skyglow usually hides more faint meteors than a darker site would. A local session may still be worthwhile for a strong shower or bright meteors. Do not assume a remote drive is better unless access is verified and its cloud and Moon window is at least comparable.
