How The Star Window Works
The Star Window organizes weather, darkness and verified astronomy information into a practical planning decision.
A score or verdict summarizes the inputs available for the selected scope. It is not an accuracy percentage or a guarantee.
From raw conditions to a decision
- Confirm that required inputs exist and are fresh enough to use.
- Compare conditions across the available hourly periods.
- Identify a useful continuous viewing window rather than relying on a daily icon.
- Apply the supported cloud, precipitation, darkness and Moon constraints for that scope.
- Translate the result into a score, verdict, confidence level, limiter and next action.
- Withhold unsupported certainty when critical data is missing or stale.
Data providers and astronomy sources
- Primary U.S. weather
- National Weather Service hourly forecasts when usable numeric coverage is available.
- Weather fallback
- Open-Meteo normalized hourly data is used where the primary U.S. source does not provide a usable record. Private provider-comparison research is not a public decision input.
- Moon and object geometry
- Skyfield with the JPL DE421 ephemeris for verified observer-based calculations.
- Darkness
- Verified darkness timing or suitability is shown for the supported forecast scope. Current light-pollution impact remains unavailable unless its own verified public source is present.
- Event dates
- NASA for eclipses and established meteor organizations for meteor-shower records.
Forecast scopes are not interchangeable

A forecast zone is not a place recommendation. It can contain private land, cities, mountains and roads with different conditions.
Score, verdict and confidence

Public confidence reflects supported-data completeness, freshness, forecast stability, and geographic scope. Cross-provider advisory comparisons remain private until their separate release gate passes. Destination pages use the same public forecast score as every other public surface; presentation does not apply a second cap.
Viewing windows and target-specific astronomy
A daily average can hide the only useful hour of the night. The system compares hourly periods and identifies the strongest supported continuous window that overlaps the required darkness and available astronomy conditions.
Basic target details may appear where supported. Expanded intent-specific astronomy recommendations remain unavailable until the required evidence review is complete. Static guides and seasonal context are not presented as coordinate-aware same-night results.
Freshness, missing data and calibration

The site uses the newest successful nightly dataset. When a required input is missing, stale or outside the supported scope, the system avoids a confident recommendation and shows a limitation or broader fallback instead.
Accuracy status: A larger verified sample is required before public accuracy claims are stable.
Outcome feedback can help evaluate whether a verdict was useful, but internal calibration and shadow results are not automatically public accuracy claims.
Known limitations
- Forecasts can miss local cloud, fog, smoke and terrain effects.
- Conditions can change after the latest update.
- Broad scopes cannot reproduce an exact observing site.
- A weather scope or destination coordinate is not proof of access.
- A score compresses information and should be read with its limiter and confidence.
- Roads, gates, parking, hours and official warnings can override a favorable sky result.
Make the final decision before leaving
- Read the verdict and main limitation, not only the score.
- Check the forecast timestamp.
- Confirm the useful viewing window.
- Review disagreement or missing-data warnings.
- Use target-specific astronomy only when it is shown as available.
- Check official weather warnings.
- Verify access, roads, gates, parking and hours.
- Recheck immediately before a long drive.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Star Window score an accuracy percentage?
No. The score summarizes the conditions and inputs used by the current system. It does not mean that a target has that percentage chance of being visible, and it is not published forecast accuracy.
Why can two nearby places receive different results?
They may use different coordinates, forecast zones, terrain, update times or astronomy geometry. A broad state or regional value can also hide differences that appear at a destination coordinate.
Does the public score compare multiple forecast providers?
Not currently. Provider-comparison research remains behind a separate release gate and does not appear as a public score input or recommendation. Public pages use only the supported fields named on the page.
Does a forecast zone identify a safe stargazing location?
No. It is a weather-reporting area, not a verified destination. It does not confirm public access, parking, darkness, road status or safety.
How often is The Star Window updated?
The public site uses the newest successful nightly dataset. Forecast pages show the current update date, and the system fails closed when the dataset is stale or required inputs are missing.
Can the final conditions still differ at my exact location?
Yes. Local cloud, haze, smoke, terrain, direct glare and rapidly changing weather can differ from the data available for the selected scope. Recheck conditions and official sources before leaving.
