How to interpret tonight's Moon
Phase is the starting point
The phase describes the illuminated shape of the Moon as seen from Earth. It helps explain whether the Moon is waxing or waning, but phase alone does not determine whether moonlight interferes with your plan.
Timing changes the result
A highly illuminated Moon below the horizon may cause little interference. A less illuminated Moon above the horizon during a faint-target window can matter more than its percentage suggests.

Moon phase tonight questions
Is illumination the same as moonlight interference?
No. Illumination describes how much of the Moon's visible disk is lit. Interference also depends on local altitude, rise and set timing, separation from the target, darkness and the observing goal.
Can a full Moon have little effect during my session?
Yes, if the Moon is below the local horizon during the useful window. A local calculation is required; phase alone cannot establish that result.
Does a low illumination percentage guarantee dark skies?
No. The Moon may still be above the horizon near a sensitive target, and artificial light, twilight, haze, smoke or cloud can brighten or block the sky independently.
Why does the recommendation change by target?
Bright planets and the Moon tolerate background light better than the Milky Way, galaxies, nebulae and faint meteors. The same lunar geometry can therefore support one observing goal while limiting another.
Are moonrise and moonset times exact for my view?
They are modeled local astronomical times, but terrain, buildings, trees and the horizon definition can change when you first or last see the Moon. They do not guarantee an unobstructed view.
